Forward Foods is a small, local specialty grocer in central Oklahoma and is known locally as the place to go for cheese.

Looking to expand their market presence in the community this project was the second store for owners Suzy Thompson and Steve “Wampus” Reynolds. This site was selected for its proximity within the Forward Foods demographic. The design program was to create a street front urban market, responding to difficult existing building conditions in an aging, underutilized and poorly planned retail strip center, and to work within a limited construction budget. Because the entry storefront is set back from the street a latticed steel screen wall was created to bring the market’s presence to the curb line, while also integrating lighting and signage. The lattice screen defines an entry courtyard for casual tasting of the markets deli offerings. The buildings low ceiling and dark interior was opened up to allow ample natural light and space. The new warm natural wood and light material palate provides comfort and compliments the service and natural food selections. The centralized prep and service area sets the focus on the Market’s core specialty, a diverse cheese selection. As with any market , product is king. Therefore the architecture serves as a modest backdrop for product display and easy accessibility. Forward Foods is designed to be a friendly and relaxed alternative to the big box mass marketplace.
